چکیده

Kakoi, Masaki Ph.D., Purdue University, May 2015. Design of Transfers from EarthMoon L1/L2 Libration Point Orbits to a Destination Object. Major Professor: Kathleen C. Howell. Within the context of both manned and robotic spaceflight activities, orbits near the Earth-Moon L1 and L2 libration points could support lunar surface operations and serve as staging areas for future missions to near-Earth asteroids as well as Mars. In fact, an Earth-Moon L2 libration point orbit has been proposed as a potential hub for excursions to Mars as well as activities in support of planetary exploration. Yet, the dynamical environment within the Earth-Moon system is complex and, consequently, trajectory design in the vicinity of Earth-Moon L1 and L2 is nontrivial. Routine transfers between an Earth-Moon L1/L2 facility and Mars also requires design strategies to deliver trajectory arcs that are characterized by a coupling between different multibody gravitational environments across two-, threeand four body systems. This investigation employs an approach to solve the general problem for transfers from the Earth-Moon libration point orbits to a destination object. Mars, Jupiter, and a near-Earth asteroid (2006RH120) are incorporated as sample destination objects, and general trajectory design procedures for multiple transfer scenarios including manifold and non-manifold options are developed by utilizing simplified models based on the knowledge of the circular restricted three-body problem. Then, the solutions are transitioned to higher-fidelity models; results for multiple departure/arrival scenarios are compared.

Iac-05-c1.6.01 Transfers between the Earth-moon and Sun-earth Systems Using Manifolds and Transit Orbits

The L1 and L2 libration points have been proposed as gateways granting inexpensive access to interplanetary space. The lunar libration points, in conjunction with the collinear libration points in the Sun-Earth system, may also become primary hubs for future human activities in the Earth’s neighborhood. The associated manifold tubes have been introduced by a number of researchers as the basis f...

Aas 13-334 Leveraging Resonant Orbit Manifolds to Design Transfers between Libration Point Orbits in Multi-body Regimes

Resonant orbits have been widely employed in mission design for planetary flyby trajectories (JEO) and, more recently, as a source of long-term stability (IBEX). Yet, resonant orbits have not been explored extensively as transfer mechanisms between non-resonant orbits in multi-body systems. To highlight the benefit of employing resonant orbits for transfers and given the increased interest in e...

Using Direct Transcription to Compute Optimal Low Thrust Transfers Between Libration Point Orbits

The direct transcription method has been used to solve many challenging optimal control problems. One such example involves the calculation of a low thrust orbit transfer between libration point orbits. The recent implementation of high order discretization techniques is first described and then illustrated by computing optimal low thrust trajectories between orbits about the L1 and L2 Earth-Mo...

Transfer Orbits in the Earth – Moon System and Refinement to Jpl Ephemerides

We describe how to determine transfers between libration point orbits and either the surface of the Moon or a Low Earth Orbit within the Circular Restricted Three – Body Problem (CR3BP) assumptions. Moreover, we explain how to refine such trajectories to ones verifing more comprehensive equations of motion. We are interested in seeing how the geometry of the nominal target orbits and of the ass...

Orbital Dynamics of an Oscillating Sail in the Earth - Moon System

There may be differences between this version and the published version. You are advised to consult the publisher's version if you wish to cite from it. The oscillating sail is a novel solar sail configuration where a triangular sail is released at a deflected angle with respect to the Sun-direction. As a result, the sail will conduct an undamped oscillating motion around the Sun-line due to th...
